Healing Stone Jewellery
Louise Ranger

Louise Ranger says the joy of operating her own jewellery business stems from the ongoing learning challenges it presents.

“It’s also exciting to see how much your business can grow,” said Louise.

“Over the last few years I tried a few different business ventures, but they didn’t work out. After reviewing the failures, I realised that in order to start a business, you need to have a quality, affordable product, be in love with the product and have unlimited drive and passion towards the success of your business,” she said.

“It is also vital to set measurable and realistic goals, be honest and ethical and — most of all — make sure there is a market for your product.

“After considering all those factors, I decided to start Healing Stone Jewellery.

"I had no training in making jewellery, but I just started with some gemstones and wire and the ideas came flowing.
“I learned through trial and error and now I make a wide range of beautiful designs.”

Louise started her business on a part-time basis in March 2005. Since then she has recognised the potential to run it on a full-time basis and hopes to do so within the year.

She has also undertaken study in personal development, finance and marketing and is currently doing the Certificate IV in Small Business Management at TAFE.

Louise offers a range of services including jewellery parties, custom-made designs and wholesale sales.

“I run my business on the basis that I provide exceptional customer service and quality affordable products.

“The greatest challenges are prioritising my work and allowing myself to make mistakes in order to learn and grow.”

Louise first learned about the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) when she was searching the Yellow Pages for small business services.

Through the SBDC she learned about the Young Business Network and the Home Based Business Network, and has used the online forums for information, networking and advice.

“The SBDC’s services are exceptional and it’s great to have an organisation dedicated to the success of small business.

“I would definitely recommend the SBDC to anyone wanting to start their own business.”
